Police lay down the law in memorial match

Police Rugby Club enjoyed a memorable day after tasting success in the annual Duckett Memorial match at Police Field at the weekend.

In an event which has been hosted every January since Commissioner George Duckett’s assassination in 1972, Police men’s first team took on a very strong National Select side in the showpiece main encounter.

Police started strongly and forced the National Select into conceding penalties deep in their own territory, with the Police opting to kick for points and keep the scoreboard ticking over, building up a 12-0 lead courtesy of Jayde Albertze’s boot.

The forwards matched up well against the sizeable opposition, proving a solid platform for the backs. Despite the difficult conditions there was fluidity to the backline, expertly marshaled by Stephan Smith and Mike Halbert.

The Police made good yards with ball in hand with only some last ditch National defensive effort preventing the men in blue from crossing the whitewash.

As expected, the National team eventually rallied through their sizeable pack, putting pressure deep in Police territory. As the pressure mounted, the Police hooker Ben Green was sent to the sin bin, with the National Select making the extra man count scoring on the stroke of half-time to keep them within striking distance.

The second-half continued where the first left off with increasing pressure coming from the National Select, but the Police defence held firm. Eventually, the National Select scored another try after a Police mistake at the line-out, putting the score at 15-12 to Police. As the clock ticked down the National Select ramped up the pressure but could not find a way to puncture the Police defence, who ultimately held on for the victory.

Jayde Albertze’s stellar performance earned him the Peter Stubbs MVP trophy.

The men’s Second XV took on the Bermuda Under-19 National team. The Police team was bolstered by the appearance of several experienced players and had no less than three father-son combinations: Jonathon Cassidy and Keith Cassidy, Andy Pell and Dan Pell, Sean Field-Lament and Jake Field.

The Police team surprised the partisan crowd by eking out an entertaining 15-12 victory, with Old boys Gareth Davis, Sean Field and Peter Lewington scoring unconverted tried. The Bermuda Under-19s responded with tries from Ja’kee Simons, Hussani Samuels and a conversation from George Peets.

Meanwhile, it was a closely contested battle between Police Women’s first team and the Best of the Rest.

Police captain Meagan Jackson opened the scoring in the second minute with a dive over the try line from quick attacking play in the opposition 22.

The opposition came back to even the score when Laura Mulligan took a quick penalty to easily dot the ball over the line. The second half saw the visiting side take the lead 10—5 with Nya Heyliger breaking through defence on the wing.

Police came back to take the lead 12—10 with Meagan Jackson diving over the line to score her second try of the day and a conversion off the boot of Fiona Donaldson.

Their hopes of winning were dashed when Jessica Cassidy scored in the dying minutes to seal victory for the best of the Best of the Rest with a final score of 15-12.

Earlier on, the Police women’s second team were victorious over a strong best of the Best of the Rest team. Kerry Heigham, of Police, scored the first try of the day when the ball was spread wide through quick hands.

April Jackson quickly came back to score for the Best of Rest by sidestepping the Police defence. From there the floodgates opened with an extravaganza of tries for the Police.

Erica McArthur and rookie Clodagh Barry both scored two tries each. Clever play saw Jessica Wagner break though to score beneath the posts, making for an easy conversion off the boot of Erica McArthur.

The final points of the day came from broken play with Kierra Smith storming down the length of the pitch to score and seal a 39—5 victory for Police.

This afternoon saw Teachers take on League Champions Renegades at National Stadium on warm winters afternoon.

Renegades men’s team taught Teachers a lesson in the league as they secured an entertaining 35-19 victory at the weekend.

Renegades broke the deadlock as Jamie Baum dove in from five metres out. Paul Kelly missed the conversion.

Teachers levelled after a kick through by Niko Francis. Connor McGowan missed the conversion. A good counter attack then freed Teachers’ captain Aldo Campbell to score, with McGowan converting. Renegades fought back as Lewis Walsh crashed over the line, with Paul Kelly converting to the leave the score level at half-time.

From a line-out, Renegades capitalised on the space out wide, with Alex Brown cantering in for a converted try. Similar forward driving patterns created Renegades’ fourth bonus-point try with Alex Brown ghosting in.

Desperate measures by Teachers to counter the Renegades’ at line-out resulted in a penalty. Baum tapped quickly in for another unconverted try.

At 29-12, Teachers fought back with spectacular 80-metres counter, which led to Francis scoring his second try. However, Renegades earned two kickable penalties for Paul Kelly to extend their lead to 35-19 and win a well-fought match.

Elsewhere, Police and Mariners held a minute of silence for former Police player Paul Marsden, who collapsed and died while playing at the National Stadium in 2006.

Two mistakes handed Police’s Spencer Brown and Stephan Smith a tries. Jayde Albertze converted both efforts. Mariners responded with a try from Conor McGlynn, which Mikel Dill converted. Mariners’ prop Dustin Archibald was then given a straight red card for a jab to the ribs of Darren Richardson.

Mariners scored another try from Cameron Foote. However, Police’s back line proved too much with tries from captain Henry Johnson, Michael Halbert, Andrew Kemp and a second from Stephan Smith. Jayde Albertze converted four out of five, as Police won 38-12.

Meanwhile, Renegades women beat Teachers women 27-10, courtesy of tries from Jackie Oliver, Ashley Godek, Sarah Maybury and Maeve Dillon. Cerise Woodley scored Teachers’ tries.

Mariners women secured a 15-12 over Police women. Tries from Apryl Jackson, Nya Heyliger and Anthi Xipolia secured the win, with Jo Murray, Mika Tomita and a conversion from Fiona Donaldson, scoring the points for Police.

Road to China

This afternoon Hamilton Parish Workman’s club hosted current league champions Prospect United at St. Davids field in an eventful episode of drama and sport.

Prospect United began their run on the road the China where they will be representing Bermuda in the World Police games.

Hamilton Parish took an early lead on a windswept pitch capitalizing on the wind at their backs and manged to squeeze a shot past Keeper Scott boosting their chances of winning the game.

Prospect did what they do best and allowed Jonny Talbot the freedom to run at goal as he qualified the game game in the 31st minute with a solo run up the middle dancing across the keeper and slotting his narrow shot into the far post side netting.

Hamilton Paris were determined to better their draw result this round and were able to score before the end of the first half with their striker doubling his scoring by way of a controversial penalty kick.

Both teams entered the half with fresh reserves and both teams utilized them to full effect.

With the wind advantage now shifted against Hamilton Parish they had to make an extra effort to run at Police and that they did with their striker completing his hat trick and adding to the lead of the game.

Unfortunately for Hamilton Parish Police had seen it all before and launched their ruthless second half attack on the East enders with Shane Simmons arriving at the spot and crossing the ball over the goal line to start the come back.

Any attack Peppers mustered up was extinguished and Police quickly pinned their opponents in their half of the field cutting off their playing time and took shots at their goal, with striker Dennis causing commotion in and around the penalty area.

Police quickly equalized and began launching a violent attack on the club causing the Hamilton parish referee to suddenly call an end to the game before the inevitable finishing the match Hamilton Parish 3 Prospect United 3.
